I recently had the pleasure of speaking to around 40 members of the Leopold View Club. Most of those attending were older women, and the message about vision loss awareness was warmly received.
During the presentation, I spoke about age-related vision loss and the increasing prevalence of eye disease as Australia’s population ages. We discussed how important it is for older people experiencing sight loss to remain active, connected and involved in their communities.
Sighted Guiding and Accessible Activities
I also talked about sighted guiding and simple ways family members, friends and volunteers can support someone who is losing their sight later in life. The audience was interested to learn about the many sporting and recreational opportunities available through Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria, as well as accessible activities that enable people with low vision or blindness to continue enjoying active and fulfilling lives.
Many of the meeting participants had friends who had either lost their sight, or were losing their sight. They were also interested in regular activities happening around Geelong such as Aquafit at Leisurelink Sport and Recreation Centre, Blind Bowls and Blind Golf.
Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria
I was pleased that Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria was highlighted in the article about the event. I think it was very well written, and I am grateful to the Leopold View Club members for their warm welcome, enthusiasm and their contribution to writing the article.
By sharing information and raising awareness, we can help ensure that people experiencing vision loss know that they can continue to lead active, connected and rewarding lives.
